“I mean, the mountains are right there!”

Leaning against the edge of the fountain, I hide my grin behind my bottle of water. Traveling is a privilege, and I know I’m more blessed than most, having seen dozens of countries thanks to my career. There are very few states I haven’t visited either. Hailee has never left Illinois, and the awe and wonder she finds in the sights around us, fills me with joy.

“I like it here,” she says, inhaling as though she can smell the mountain air, even though they’re miles away.

Jax leans against a signpost across from us, his mouth quirking in amusement. “Perhaps you should move here instead of Vegas.”

“What?” Hailee turns, her features falling into a frown. “No, I have to go to Vegas.”

“I’m sure you’ll like Vegas, too,” he says with a shrug. “It’s pretty different from here, though.”

Hailee’s eyebrows rise in interest. “You’ve been?”

“A long time ago. Lots of tourists, bright lights, and booze.” He takes a long swig from his bottle of coke. “And sand. Lots of fucking sand.”

Carter snorts. “You’re going to Arizona. There’s a lot more sand there.”

Jax raises a dark blond eyebrow before returning his gaze to the mountains behind the city skyline. “I said I was going to Phoenix. I didn’t say I was happy about it.”

I meet Carter’s eye, and he tilts his head, but I shrug. We met up with Jax for breakfast before deciding to wander the city, and in all honesty, it’s been fun. Despite my outward confidence that things would be okay, a part of me had expected things to be a little awkward. I even thought I might have scared Jax off with my forwardness this morning. I’m usually pretty good at reading people, but I just can’t be sure with Jax. He definitely checked me out at the restaurant, and I caught him watching me and Carter a couple of times last night, too. I’m not an idiot. I know he was hot for Hailee, not me or Carter. But he wasn’t repulsed by the idea, and that’s what’s keeping a spark flickering in the back of my head.

“What if we stayed here for another night?” Hailee says, her teeth tugging her bottom lip in the way that makes my blood stir.

Carter looks up from his phone. “What do you mean?”

“I mean, what if we hang out here for the day and leave for Four Corners tomorrow? It’s just over six hours to the monument, so if we leave today, we wouldn’t get to see it until the morning anyway.”

“Shame it’s not winter,” I say, glancing at the mountains. “There’s some pretty good skiing around here.”

Carter shoves his phone in his pocket. “Is there something in particular you want to do, Hailee?”

“Not really. I just thought maybe a break from driving would be nice. And, mountains.”

I laugh. “It’s fine with me. There’s no huge deadline for me to get to San Francisco.”

Carter shrugs. “Same. A holiday’s a holiday, right?”

There’s something in his tone
